The Crit Lab Fellowship
Fellowship applications for Fall 2021 are now open.
The Crit Lab introduced our Fellowship Program in Spring 2021.
Deadline August 10!
The application deadline has passed. We will offer another Fellowship for Spring 2022.
The Lab offers one Fellowship each session. Fellowship includes full tuition for one session, permanent membership in our private FB group, an artist page, and free participation in the Flat File. Fellowships are merit-based and offered to talented artists who might otherwise not be able to participate in the Lab.
Congratulations to our first Crit Lab Fellow: Lauren Levine.
We are grateful for your valuable contribution in the spring session.
Lauren G. Levine
I have a visceral connection to my materials—it’s a churning gut feeling, aligned with the physicality and full body experience of painting. Visual impressions and lived moments leave their marks inside of me and alchemically transform from mystical to physical as they flow outside of me and onto the canvas through paint’s viscosity. While my work is not representational or intended to depict anything explicitly, ghosts of tangible and psychological places, along with beings, dreams, and shadows emerge.
Using oil on canvas and mixed media on paper, the imagery is atmospheric, elemental, and in recent pieces has more gravity, is stronger and hotter, echoing today’s discernible political, global and environmental impact. My paintings have come to reflect the state of the world, while my drawings are more intimate and personal—their interplay inexorably binds their development, creating a continuum where each piece grows from the last, each responding to these unprecedented times and our globally shared reality.
